16-Year-Old Student Detained for Bringing Gun to Clay-Chalkville High School

A 16-year-old student was arrested Wednesday at Clay-Chalkville High School for bringing a gun to campus, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before noon, a Jefferson County School Resource Officer (SRO) was alerted that a student at the school had a handgun. The SRO swiftly seized the weapon and detained the male student.

The sheriff’s office stated that the student never brandished the weapon or threatened anyone with it.

Dr. Walter Gonsoulin, superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, sent an email to parents Wednesday night to update them on the situation. He emphasized that the information did not originate from social media.

“A person with knowledge of the situation reported it to authorities. Our school resource officer handled the matter quickly and safely,” Gonsoulin said.

He pointed out that a lot of false and misleading information about school security is being spread. Gonsoulin noted that unfounded rumors are causing unnecessary fear through social media posts. He urged parents and students to contact law enforcement or school administrators with any concerns, allowing them to distinguish fact from fiction.

He added, “Please trust us. We investigate every threat. If they are credible, we will take action and keep you informed about our response.”

Sheriff Mark Pettway said, “We are pleased that the individual who reported the incident felt comfortable enough to alert the school SRO. Our SROs work diligently to bridge the gap between law enforcement and our youth.”

The student is currently held at the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center, facing charges for being a minor forbidden to possess a pistol and receiving stolen property.

The sheriff’s office encourages anyone with information to contact them at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
