National Hurricane Center predicts possible tropical depression in Gulf of Mexico next week

According to the National Hurricane Center, there is a high possibility of a tropical depression forming in the Gulf of Mexico this week. The conditions seem favorable for the formation of a tropical storm or even a hurricane.

It is still uncertain where exactly the system will track and whether it will affect Florida. However, one thing is clear – heavy rainfall is expected in certain areas of Central America as a result of this system.

According to the National Hurricane Center, a tropical disturbance is expected to develop in the Caribbean Sea in the coming days and could potentially strengthen into a tropical depression as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico.

The system predicts that the disturbance will continue to strengthen and has the potential to become the next named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which would be called Tropical Storm Helene.

Heavy rain is expected to occur in Central America regardless of when the formation of the weather system takes place. However, it is still too early to determine the potential impact it will have on the U.S. Gulf Coast, including Florida.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that a wide area of low pressure over the western Caribbean Sea and parts of Central America is causing scattered showers and thunderstorms. The NHC believes that the environmental conditions are conducive for the system to slowly develop over the coming days.

The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring three disturbances, and one of them is of particular interest. Below, you will find more information on this specific disturbance.

Is the potential tropical disturbance headed toward Florida?

At this point in time, the exact trajectory and potential impact of this developing system remains uncertain. It has not yet evolved into a tropical depression, tropical storm, or a hurricane, which means it is too soon to determine if Florida will be affected.
